Webdesign

Let’s start with a very common question about websites: what is considered to be a good website and what a poor website? The answer to this is very simple: every website should be a good website because the person who ordered the site had to give his or her approval before the go-live. But in actual fact, almost all websites miss ‘something’ and there are invariably things that will irritate you. Even on your website these items are relevant (indeed for us too).

So let’s just focus a bit more into detail on what should and shouldn’t be done on a site. It is not our intention to write down THE internet bible for a successful site (this is just not possible keeping in mind all the possible tools, automations, …) but we can provide you with a few ‘guidelines’ for developing a good site, that will be appreciated by your visitors.

Golden rules :

  • Keep the text on the site short and comprehensible. Work with bullets like we do here (easier to read)
  • Keep a good overview on the site and make sure the pages are homogeneous.
  • Moving pictures and movies are pretty and ‘cool’, but too many of these can overload the site and have the opposite effect for visitors.
  • If you have information stored in databases and want to share this data with other people, don’t start to re-enter the data (yes this is still done a lot) on the website but use a real and valid database solution.
  • If you have the possibility to work with a graphics professional, don’t hesitate to do so. Most of the time these people can create a more ‘tailor made’ layout than development people.
  • If you have a multiple language site, try to keep all the languages separated. Having all the languages on one page can be really confusing.
  • Before you start with the development of the site, make sure that it will be possible to modify and/or extend it easily afterwards. People are often blocked once the site is finished and they need the help of the developers for even minor updates. Nowadays, there are enough tools and development options to avoid this.
  • Besides the construction of the site there’s also the online advertising and promotion that will convince visitors to have a look at your website. Many web designers have no knowledge of all the details involved in generating site traffic. A central part of developing a site is to bring visitors to your web site.
  • And last but not least, no matter how complex your site, it remains your first business card. The first impression that people get from your site is mostly the one they will remember for a long time.

If you’re about to build a new site, please keep an eye on the items mentioned above. The more precise the preparation (analysis) and the more you focus, even from the start, to the extensions in the future, the more efficient and cost effective the final result will be.

A website that contains the correct mixture between a good style, a unique design, a layout that reflects the image of the company and its products and a functional and technically well balanced structure, is a website that will be very much appreciated (and therefore visited), on the world wide web.

If you would like to have more feedback or advise concerning your (new) website, don’t hesitate to contact us. We will set up as soon as possible a meeting to gather all your ideas, give you our feedback and hopefully we can work together to bring your business concept, your product and the philosophy of your company into a ‘tailor made’ website
